How to Get More Emails to Grow Your List

And when you follow the marketing plan of building a database by getting email addresses, sending two educational messages a month out to the people you know to stay in touch, and then prioritizing your follow-up with the people who watch those videos for business, the question arises: how do you go about getting emails to add them to your database in the first place? In this video you'll learn my top tips to do just that.

Frank: So you've acquired all of these business cards from networking events and meeting people, maybe you have Post-It notes sitting on your desk. And think about all of the people for a minute in your cell phone, in your Gmail, in your Outlook, all of those contacts. That's your database and your database is the number asset that you own that can send you business.

So if you're not staying in touch with these people you're literally throwing them away, ending up on this perpetual transaction treadmill of having to go out and find new business without having any way to stay in touch. So think for a moment of all the people you've met over the years; your Facebook friends, your LinkedIn contacts, the people in your iPhone, the people in your email marketing account, even your mom or dad. These are people who will receive your content, they'll watch your videos because they know you, they like you, they trust you, and if you're in an industry like fitness or maybe finance or even spiritual where they're kind of concepts that everyone is interested in.
Everyone's going to love your great content if you're answering questions that people truly have. So the first place to start building an email list is round up the names of all the people that you know and send them an email saying, "I'd like to send you my great educational videos on this topic. If you don't want them, go ahead and opt out here, but here's my very first video." So tip number two: After every conversation you have with somebody just simply ask for their email address.

And all you have to do at the end of the conversation, whether you meet them in person on the phone is say, "Hey, I publish videos about these great ways to solve problems in your life. What's your best email address? I want to make sure you receive them."

And all you've got to do is ask for the email and they’re going to say, "Sure," and there's no reason you couldn't ask at least three email addresses a day from people that you talk to. "Hey Tom, can I have your email address?"

Tom: Of course, buddy.

Frank: So tip number three: You can purchase or compile a list of your ideal prospects. Now this is super cool, not everyone really knows about this. So do you know if you're a fitness trainer you can go to a list broker and say, "I'd like the names of all the subscribers to a fitness magazine." Or let's say you're a real estate agent, you can call up a list broker and say, "I'd like the names of all the people that live in a certain neighborhood so I can see if I can help them sell their house."
Well if you go to Google and just type in "list broker" you can find people that sell this information, you can purchase a list of names of all the people who have the problem that you solve. The question is—you just can't bring those emails in your database, that would be spamming.

So here's what you do, you reach out to them, you call them or just send a personal one-off email saying, "Hey, here's who I am, I publish these great videos on the—here's the problem that I solve or here's how I can help you improve your life with my content. Do I have your permission to stay in touch? What's your best email address? Is this the best email address to stay in touch with?" They say yes, bring them into your database.

So tip number four, and this is my favorite tip: Get a referral partner to mail for you, this is industry slang. So here's how this works: here's you and someone else has the database that you want access to, let's say you're at—I'll use fitness, let's say you're a fitness person and there's a supplement company. You go to the supplement company and say, "Will you send an email to all of your customers about my great videos?"

So the supplement company here sends and email to all the customers that they know saying how great your videos are, how great your content is, and these people can come back to your website to opt in.

That's what getting a referral partner to mail for you is, is that if you can't go out and build the database yourself, if you don't have any database to start with, and maybe you can't purchase or compile the list for whatever reason, try to find people who already have access to that list and get them to tell the customers in their database and their prospects about you to get the word out about your great content.

Which leads us to tip number five: Put an opt-in box on your website. Now this is the most leveraged activity you could to do build your email database. Literally it sits on your website and people put their email address in, you build your database passively. You don't have to go out and talk to people, you don't necessarily have to go build and compile a list and go ask them permission to stay in touch, this is a powerful strategy, but it's a passive strategy.

So it starts with going out and meeting people, asking to stay in touch, maybe building or compiling a list, getting a referral partner to mail for you and when that referral partner sends that email out you send all that traffic right back to an opt-in point to put the email address in. And what's great about all of these strategies is it's not spamming. I hate spam, no one wants spam. Do you guys want spam?

They don't want spam, nobody wants spam, and every single one of these strategies I share with you today are all permission-based strategies to build you a real list of people that really want to hear from you and eventually will buy whatever it is that you're selling.

So in summary, how do you get email addresses to stay in touch with the people that you know will eventually buy from you, refer to you, and give you business? There's five ways, this is what we covered today. You're going to start with the people you know, number two is after every conversation you have you're going to ask them, "Can I have your email address to stay in touch?" Number three: you can go to a list broker, then finally four and five are very leveraged activities, four being my favorite: find other partners in the industry, get them to send an email to those people about your great videos and drawing those people back. And number five: an opt-in box on your website.
You know all this stuff is important and these are all great ways for you to help make more money, increase your referrals, but it's a lot more than this. You know you're not going to sit in front of that camera and give us great content if you're just thinking about how to make the next dollar. What this is truly about is that with a simple webcam and all the technology available to you you can truly scale your impact.

And these videos aren't going to go anywhere when you put them online, they're going to be there forever to help you leave a great legacy. If you're a great professional at what you do, you can get the expertise out of your head, onto a video very inexpensively, and out to the people who need it which can really help people.

And that's what I want to challenge you to be able to do. That's what this is all about. It's not about necessarily growing your business, that's a side effect of you wanting to go out and give and share your knowledge and help people solve their problems.
